Nortel Winding Down Metro Ethernet In Favor of Packet Optical Transport

March 3rd, 2009

The Nortel ERS 8600 seems like such a great platform based on the impression I’ve gotten from industry sources.  I would think selling this division makes more sense than just killing it on the vine.  It’s just sad to see a switch that had so much promise go the way of the dodo, which it looks like it certainly will.  Hopefully PBB, PBB-TE and PLSB don’t die with it.  See the article at Network World: Nortel curtailing Carrier Ethernet switch/router investment

Soooo… You’re Giving Bonuses to Execs? Really, Nortel?

March 2nd, 2009

It’s amazing that these guys still get away with this time and again.  The executives at companies sign the pink slips for thousands of people then think it’s OK to give themselves a bonus.   I mean, what kind of people do that?   How out of touch with humanity do you have to be?  To each and every exec at Nortel taking this bonus, listen up.  You are the one that deserved to be fired.  The chances are more likely that you screwed things up to make your business bomb, not the hard working folks you just canned.  I’m sure people would say this is more complicated than that, but I don’t see how it could be much more so.  See the article at Light Reading: Nortel Loses Billions & Plans Bonuses

How do we stop this kind of crap?  Anyone have ideas?

PBB, PBB-TE and PLSB are cool

February 28th, 2009

There are quite a few network operators that have been keeping tabs on Provider Backbone Bridging or PBB, Provider Backbone Bridging-Traffic Engineering or PBB-TE and Provider Link State Bridging or PLSB as they’ve made their way out of the Nortel Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) labs and into the standards bodies.  For those of you not aware of these protocols, they are extensive additions to Ethernet that aim to make it more scalable and flexible to suit tranport of modern Carrier Ethernet networks.  Read more…

Nortel Lays Off 3,200

February 25th, 2009

I guess this is something we knew was coming considering their recent bankrupt status but it looks like Nortel is being forced to let some folks go.  The Nortel Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) division has been so promising.  Hopefully this is first step to being more lean and making the MEN division the focus.  Some of the creations out of their labs like PBB and PLSB are too sweet to just go away.
