Last Week’s Internet Meltdown

February 24th, 2009

For those who haven’t read about it, on Monday February 16th, 2009 there was a very small service provider in the Czech Republic that committed a ridiculous BGP configuration to their router causing major problems for network operators worldwide.  A provider called SuproNet added more than 255 prepends onto a prefix making routers around the world running older software ill equipped to handle this retardedness to barf on themselves.  The resulting cascade of resetting BGP sessions created quite a serious impact to stability on the Internet.  I don’t think I can grant justice to the description of a root cause so I defer you to this article at Renesys

Reckless Driving on the Internet
